ACAI Activewear Max Stretch Outdoor Leggings Review | GIFTED

I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect outdoor trousers for quite some time now. Ever since returning from my first long distance hiking adventure with the dogs, I knew I wanted to up my trouser game. They’ve got to be lightweight, quick drying and easy to maintain. I first heard of ACAI Activewear and their water resistant trousers via Fran from North Cornwall Dog Walking last winter. She’d just purchased a pair and was looking forward to putting them through their paces. When they reached out to ask if I’d be interested to try out their MAX Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers on our dog friendly adventures, I was super keen!

DOGSCLOSURE: ACAI Activewear gifted me a pair of Max Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers in exchange for this blogpost.

I spend a lot of time adventuring outdoors with my dogs, be it hiking the Cornish Coast Path, climbing on Dartmoor or wild camping a little further from home. Something I get really frustrated with is having wet legs and owning two spaniels that like to shake off right next to you just amplifies the problem! As a woman, I feel a lot of outdoor products aren’t made with real female bodies in mind. Outdoor trousers are often a generic straight fit, which isn’t a flattering cut on everyone. I personally love my legs and like to show them off as much as I can. I practically live in skinny jeans and leggings, especially during winter. Of course, these aren’t always the wisest choice for dog walks, as they take ages to dry. However I’ve always preferred them to the shape of outdoor trousers. They just make me feel like a hot, frumpy mess the majority of the time – it’s not a good look!

The Fit:

ACAI Activewear’s MAX Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers are a game changer for me. They’re form fitting, with a four way stretch that lets you enjoy a wide range of movement. I’m always bending down when out on walks, whether it’s to pick up poo, throw Hen’s ball into the river or to untangle Woody when he gets caught up in the bushes. Being able to bend down fully without worrying about anything ripping is fantastic. The high waisted style ensures everything stays where it should and the high quality softshell fabric maintains its opacity even when stretched. It’s reassuring to know I’m not unintentionally flashing passers by when I’m negotiating obstacles on walks!

I think the trousers are incredibly comfy. They’re a very minimalist design, which mimics the style of skinny jeans, featuring belt loops and four reasonably sized pockets. They fasten with a popper at the top and there are no uncomfortable zips around the ankles, making them easy to wear with full height hiking boots and tucked into thick socks. I was between sizes on the ACAI Activewear size guide. However the ACAI team advised I sized down due to the stretchy nature of the fabric. They fit me perfectly! They’re snug and flattering and make me feel so much more attractive than other outdoor trousers I’ve tried in the past. The trousers mould to your body over time, just like jeans. I’m glad I didn’t buy the larger size as they definitely would have grown to be too baggy over time.

Water Resistance:

The water resisting properties of ACAI Activewear Outdoor Trousers makes them incredibly popular on social media. It also makes them very dog friendly too. While not completely waterproof, ACAI Activewear trousers can withstand light to moderate rain showers with ease. They repel the water, causing the droplets to form beads as they fall off the garment. This also means your legs stay dry when your dogs decide to shake right next to you after a game of fetch in the river. You can easily wipe off muddy paw marks from when dogs jump up excitedly too.

The MAX Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers are quick drying, perfect for if you do get caught out in a heavier shower. The fabric is lightweight too, making them a great choice for spring, summer and autumn adventures. They do need regular reproofing every 3 to 5 washes in order to maintain their water resistance. Other than that, they’re a very low maintenance garment. They can be washed with similar colours at 30 degrees and either dried on the radiator, low temperature tumble dry cycle or ironed on the reverse side. This is a real bonus for me, I don’t have to worry about getting them dirty on walks. These trousers are fast becoming a staple in my wardrobe for the majority of our dog friendly adventures.

The softshell fabric used in the ACAI Activewear MAX Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers is lightweight. I usually overheat very easily on walks but haven’t had this problem while wearing my ACAI Activewear trousers. They are very breathable trousers, however they’re definitely not windproof. This makes them a great choice for day hikes and while only water resistant, they fit really well under my hardshell waterproof overtrousers on more miserable day hikes on the moors. There’s the GRANITE Mid-Weight Outdoor Trouser option too, if you’re looking for something a little thicker, perhaps for backpacking adventures where you need a wider range of layers. I’d love to try a pair of ACAI Activewear’s Thermal Skinny Outdoor Trousers. They’re fleece lined, which I imagine will help keep the cold and wind out effectively in more miserable conditions. I reckon they’d be a good choice for winter dog walks in the UK too, especially in exposed areas like Dartmoor or on the South West Coast Path. I really hope they’ll bring back their Hiking Shorts too, as I think this softshell fabric would be ideal for summer hiking adventures with the dogs. A good quality pair of lightweight hiking shorts has been on my gear wish list for months!

My ACAI Activewear MAX Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers are a great addition to my outdoor adventure gear and have been practically glued to my legs since they arrived. At £66, they’re reasonably priced compared to other options you can purchase in outdoor stores. Considering I’ve worn these trousers pretty much every day since they arrived, to me they’re more than worth the investment. In addition to the lightweight, breathable fabric and water resistance, I love how flattering these trousers look on me. I feel far more comfortable out on adventures now and love that my outdoor trousers reflect my personal fashion style.
